The University of Paderborn in Germany, CeLight Israel, and Photline in France today announced what they claims is the first real-time electronic tracking of optical polarization changes in a polarization-multiplexed synchronous optical quadrature phase shift keying (search for QPSK) data transmission (Visit the synQPSK Consortium Web site for photographs and detailed measurement results.)

This milestone was achieved in the synQPSK Consortium, funded by the European Commission. The synQPSK modulation scheme quadruples optical fiber capacity and allows for a purely electronic equalization of chromatic and polarization mode dispersions in optical fiber.

In the University of Paderborn, the signal from a standard distributed-feedback laser was impressed with 2.8-Gbit/sec data in two QPSK modulators from Photline to transport in-phase and quadrature data in two orthogonal polarizations at a line rate of only 0.7 Gbits/sec. After transmission over 80 km of fiber, the signals were received in a polarization diversity intradyne coherent optical receiver with two integrated-optical 90 ° hybrids from CeLight and another standard laser as a local oscillator. The detected four photocurrent signals were proportional to in-phase and quadrature components of the received optical field in two polarizations.

After analog-to-digital conversion, the electronic field vector comprising two mixed polarizations was transformed into a polarization-separated one by a matrix multiplication in a field-programmable gate array, say the researchers. Finally, a phase-noise tolerant feed-forward scheme recovered the intermediate frequency carrier in spite of its 2-MHz linewidth, and the four digitized data signals were demodulated synchronously.

Correlation of the four data streams before and behind the decision circuits was performed to dynamically update the sixteen matrix elements. Motorized fiber loops causing endless polarization changes at a speed of up to 50 rad/sec made the received signal highly time-variable. However, a polarization control time constant of 23.5 microseconds rendered this harmless and allowed successful data recovery, note the researchers. The achieved bit error ratio was within the threshold of state-of-the-art forward error correction schemes, they claim.

A summary of the paper can be found here.

While other researchers have reported only offline polarization acquisition, or real-time data transmission without polarization multiplex, this is the first time that all ingredients of an ultimate performance, bandwidth-efficient, robust optical modulation scheme have been combined, say the researchers. Those ingredients include real-time adaptive electronic polarization tracking and synchronous demodulation, transmission of four bit per symbol using QPSK, and polarization division multiplexed standard lasers. With suitable electronics for 40Gbps (10-Gbaud) operation on the horizon, including the possibility of a greater than tenfold polarization tracking speed increase, these properties make synQPSK a very attractive option for the cost-effective growth of optical transmission capacity, say the researchers.

DiCon Fiberoptics Inc., manufacturer of fiber-optic components, modules, and test equipment, has announces new MEMS tunable filters in 100- and 50-GHz configurations. DiCon’s MEMS Tunable Filters are the latest additions to its family of reconfigurable network elements, designed to help OEMs and network operators more easily manage their networks at the wavelength level. The tunable filters are based on DiCon’s proprietary MEMS Mirror technology, which the company claims provides low insertion loss and high levels of optical performance, including low PDL, low power consumption, and a compact, cost-effective form factor.

According to DiCon, the tunable filters operate in either the C or L bands and are particularly useful in applications such as ASE noise suppression, wavelength selection, signal tracking, and optical performance monitoring. Moreover, the company confirms that these MEMS tunable filters will form the basis for its Optical Channel Performance Monitor (OCPM) modules, and they can also be integrated into its general purpose test & measurement platform for test automation applications.

The MEMS devices are manufactured in Dicon’s in-house MEMS wafer fab. “By applying our proprietary MEMS approach to tunable filters, Dicon is able to revolutionize the function of wavelength selection by replacing older, bulkier technologies for tunable filters,” explains Dr. Ho-Shang Lee, CEO of DiCon FiberOptics. “Our goal is to provide the necessary optical components and modules to make wavelength management easy for the next generation of dynamically reconfigurable networks.” The new modules will be introduced at OFC 2007 in Anaheim, CA, March 27-29, 2007, in both 100-GHz and 50-GHz configurations.

Capella provider of wavelength selective switches (WSS) for use in reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) applications, today announced the completion of $20 million of equity and debt financing. The round was co-led by Levensohn Venture Partners and Rustic Canyon Partners and included funding from Formative Ventures, as well as participation by existing investors. Square1 Bank provided the banking and debt facilities.

As part of the transaction, Kip Sheeline from Levensohn Venture Partners and Michael Kim from Rustic Canyon Partners will join Capella’s Board of Directors.

Capella says it will use the funds to accelerate shipments to existing customers and to expand its product lines to serve additional markets.

“We are excited to add a new group of top-tier investors who share Capella’s vision,” contends Larry Schwerin, CEO of Capella. “Having their support validates our business model and enables us to meet the high-level of customer demand for our products. It is critical that we take advantage of our momentum domestically and internationally by expanding Capella’s product family and market opportunities and by further scaling our manufacturing operations at Fabrinet,” he says. “This capital also enables us to more effectively support our strategic relationship with Furukawa, and to ensure complete customer satisfaction during a period of rapid growth.”

“Telecom carriers are in the midst of upgrading their networks to support new IP-based services such as faster broadband networks, video, business Ethernet services, and wireless backhaul,” adds Jeffrey Osborne, equity research analyst at CIBC World Markets. “We see wavelength selective switches, such as Capella’s next-generation technology, being very well positioned to capitalize during this period of network transformation.”
Capella will feature a live demonstration of its products at OFC/NFOEC (Booth #3713), to be held March 25-29, 2007, in Anaheim, CA.
