In searching for an alternative to the expensive “Photoshops” of the Net, I came across these free image editors for the Windows platform. Thought I would share the info with everyone in case someone else needs the help I didn’t have.
GIMP for Windows
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages. When I first tried to install it, I got several errors regarding a missing dll. I didn’t spend too much time debugging, I just moved on to the next option.
Serif PhotoPlus
PhotoPlus is your number one choice for photo editing software and working with bitmap images for the web, multimedia, or the printed page. Once you’ve got your image into PhotoPlus, you can enhance and alter its appearance with a diverse toolkit of functions and effects. The free version is an outdated version of software. Basically its a teaser to get you to upgrade to the latest version.
Paint.NET
Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows 2000, XP, Vista, or Server 2003. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development at Washington State University as an undergraduate senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it.
Ultimate Paint
Ultimate Paint is a full-featured 32-bit Windows graphics program for image creation, viewing and manipulation. You can download different versions, see what extras Ultimate Paint gives you compared to other paint programs, take a look at its cool plug-in effects.
